Our history

  • 1987

    Iseme & Company Advocates founded by the late Michael J Iseme.

  • 1993

    James Kamau joins the firm and the name changes to Iseme, Kamau & Company Advocates.
    He is currently the Managing Partner.

  • 2000

    Iseme, Kamau & Maema Advocates is introduced to the market following William Maema
    joining the firm. This name has remained with the firm since and is widely known in the market as IKM.

  • 2002

    IKM merged with Kamau Karori & Company Advocates and retained the name Iseme Kamau & Maema Advocates. Upon the merger, Kamau Karori became the head of the Dispute Resolution practice.

  • 2007

    IKM launches a Tax Department to meet the needs of their clients.

  • 2010

    February sees IKM announce its alliance with top ranked international law firm, DLA Piper.
    This places the firm in a unique position to provide legal services for both local and cross-
    border corporate/commercial matters.

  • 2010

    In October, Juris East Africa (JEA) is established as an alliance to provide co-ordinated legal
    services to regional and international business across East Africa. JEA was formed between IKM, Equity Juris Chambers of Rwanda, IMMMA Advocates of Tanzania and Sebalu & Lule Advocates of Uganda. The firms are preferred members of DLA Piper Africa in Rwanda, Tanzania and Uganda respectively.

  • 2011

    Rubeya & Company Advocates – a DLA Piper Africa member in Burundi, is incorporated into
    the JEA alliance.

  • 2012

    IKM is named one of the top 1000 global law firms in trademark law practice and related
    intellectual property matters. The World Trademark Review (WTR) 1000 identifies the leading players in 70 key jurisdictions globally, shining a spotlight on firms and individuals that are deemed outstanding in their area of practice.

  • 2013

    Thomson Reuters Elite reports on January 9 that leading corporate-commercial law firm
    Iseme Kamau & Maema Advocates (IKM) has rolled out Envision as its comprehensive financial and matter management system. The move is said to support IKM’s long-term strategy of becoming a premier commercial law firm in East Africa.

  • 2015

    The Legal 500 annual ranking lists Kenyan-based IKM Advocates as a Top Tier firm in
    Banking and Finance, and Commercial, Corporate and M&A. The Legal 500 assesses the strengths of law firms in 106 jurisdictions and highlights practice area teams who are providing the most cutting edge and innovative advice to corporate counsel.
