IKM provides legal expertise to both local and international NGOs in Kenya operating in diverse sectors such as flora and fauna research, education, public and tropical health (HIV/AIDS, malaria, child and maternal health), humanitarian response , environment and climate change, poverty alleviation/eradication, animal protection and wildlife conservation, agro economics and forestry, technology, entrepreneurial training, women empowerment, social marketing, medical relief, water and sanitation, human rights, social justice, good governance, livelihoods, social welfare, etc.
While these organisations operate in the same NGO/PBO space, their needs and challenges are all unique depending on the field of operation. At IKM, we look after our NGO/PBO client’s specific needs and provide tailor-made practical solutions to the challenges they face from time to time.
Other international NGOs merely operate from Kenya but undertake projects in the neighbouring countries such as Somalia, Ethiopia, South Sudan and Uganda. Their legal presence in the country is a legal issue that requires careful handling.
IKM regularly conducts client training seminars on the developments in the law governing the NGO/PBO sector as well as updating clients on the ever-changing policies of the regulator through IKM Alerts.
William Maema, an expert in NGO/PBO law, heads the practice at IKM and is a well known name within the Kenyan NGO/PBO fraternity. He has in-depth and practical knowledge of the sector and its governing legal and regulatory framework, having advised clients in this sector for over 25 years. He has published several articles in the mainstream media commenting on various aspects of the law and is regularly consulted on the subject.
